In recent years, a sinister side of Ireland's past and its treatment of women has come to light through discoveries and testimonies throughout the country. A dark history of power and oppression, our country's treatment of 'fallen women' has been described by the State as "our nations shame". 'Free the Fallen' deals with the subjugation of Irish women and female sexuality, particularly unmarried mothers. The project does not aim to blame one group; instead it shines a spotlight on an entire society which contributed to a strict and judgmental command, and enabled the perpetuation of the sorrow of so many. The project seeks to document and explore the history of Ireland's fallen women and their children, the pain caused, and move towards repairing the wounds of a country breaking free from its dark past.
