Nicole Dolan
In The Hands of a Man

Through the eyes of my grandmother, I am voicing and documenting the shocking act of two brothers deliberately breaking her sewing machine in spite of her leaving the family home to get married. My aim is to ignite imaginations, evoke emotions and capturing the narrative through textiles. Using the tools used in sewing ie. needle, thread, sewing machine, etc.. I have captured hidden messages, revelations, statements, whispers, marking them, threading them, leaving them to be read by others. Offering to disclose the private, document the deeply personal and venerate the lives of others. Embroidering and embellishing around her personal objects are the powerful, commemorative symbols for the story. Hopefully, my work will raise awareness of the struggles women had during this time 'at the hands of a man'.
