Situland

For an object to be ‘in situ’ means an object is enmeshed within physical and contextual conditions. A disused toilet block near the Vartry Reservoir in Co. Wicklow was chosen for a project to evoke painting’s architectural history through the medium of frescoes. The toilet block was knocked down before the frescoes could be completed. Situland is the virtual site that results from recordings and surveys made during excursions to the reservoir. By using an audio guide of the site, documentations of the former structure and the material language of frescoes, a site whose origins are abstracted by their disappearance, is reconstituted.
