Sophie McDonnell is an artist from Dublin. Working in the medium of site-specific sound installation, McDonnell’s work explores the relationship between sound and space. She records the everyday sounds generated by the electrical appliances found in the familiar home environment and relocates them into an unfamiliar environment. Through the act of displacing and recomposing these sounds, she aims to make the listeners more aware of this ‘hidden labour force’ and their importance in the home. By giving them a voice, she introduces the concept of ‘anthropomorphism’ and points to the role they play in the world’s networks of relationships.
